The area’s history of poverty and decay is countered by the grandness of its cultural institutions, the naming of its streets (to mimic important streets of London) and on a smaller scale, the width of the pavements around All Saints Park.
Affleck’s Arcade
Pictured is Oldham Street, specifically Afflecks Palace in 1985, a modern cultural icon for the city and one where very little seems to have changed. Afflecks was a beacon for young people, located in what would become the Northern Quarter but at the time of this photo was nameless and referred to usually by street or business names

Being part of this project has personal meaning to me as it is a collection I have used in the past: sitting in Central Library researching for school projects and well into my adult life when the archive could be accessed from the comfort of my home or anywhere, electronically.
